Heritage Jiu Jitsu: the before and after numbers

Heritage Jiu Jitsu came to me with a WordPress site someone else built. I took it over, rebuilt it from the ground up, and I still look after it. Here is that old site next to my rebuild, tested on October 19, 2026, with Google’s Lighthouse tool on phone settings, and re-checked on October 20 and October 29. These results are shared with the school’s permission.

Check it yourself: heritagejiujitsu.com (opens in a new tab)

  • 99Speed score on a phone, up from 80 on the old site (median of three runs, October 29)
  • 3x+lighter on phones than the old site: 0.4 to 1.9 MB, down from 5.8 MB
  • 100Accessibility, up from 93 on the old site
  • #1Named first by ChatGPT and Google for kids jiu jitsu near Wake Forest (checked October 13)

Several runs of each site on October 19, and of the new site again on October 29 for its speed and main content times. Speed scores vary a few points from run to run, so a range is shown. Page weight changes with whether the signup form’s spam check loads during a test, which is why the new site shows a range.

Re-checked October 20: three more phone runs on the live site scored 94, 95, and 94 on speed, and 100 on accessibility, best practices, and SEO every time. The main content appeared in 2.8 to 2.9 seconds.

Re-checked October 29, after I tuned how the page loads: three phone runs scored 99, 99, and 98 on speed, and 100 on accessibility, best practices, and SEO every time. The main content appeared in 1.7 to 1.9 seconds.

What I built

A sample of what is live

Built and live

  • Free week form on its own site. Every signup goes to the owner’s inbox and CRM at the same moment, with a bot check to block spam.
  • Full Spanish site: home, gear store, and birthday parties.
  • Gear store with rash guards and hoodies, card and mobile payment options, free pickup, and an email to the owner on every order.
  • Kids birthday party pages with an inquiry form, plus a coach hiring page.
  • Live class schedule with filters and save-to-calendar.
  • Review wheel of real Google reviews, in English and Spanish.
  • All 8 blog posts moved over, with old links redirecting so nothing breaks.

Built for Google (SEO)

  • SEO score 100, up from 92. The old site’s SEO plugin was never connected to Google.
  • Business details in every page’s code (location, hours, FAQs, and job listings) in the format Google reads directly.
  • A sitemap of all 17 pages, and English and Spanish pages linked so Spanish speakers see the Spanish site.
  • 59 redirect rules send old web addresses to the right new pages, so old links keep working.

Fixed from the old site

  • Server software that was past security support
  • Site software and 13 plugins behind on updates, with auto-updates broken
  • An SEO plugin never connected to Google
  • No SPF record on the email domain, which hurts delivery (fixed)
  • Over a year of unchecked spam comments

Always on

  • Checked every 5 minutes, day and night, so I know about problems before the owner does.
  • The security certificate renews automatically.
  • Hundreds of updates shipped since launch, each live in about a minute.
  • The old site is backed up and kept.

Who is finding it

  • Named first by ChatGPT and Google for “best kids jiu jitsu near Wake Forest” (checked October 13).
  • In a signed-out test on October 20, ChatGPT and Google both named Heritage Jiu Jitsu first for “best no-gi jiu jitsu gym in Wake Forest.”
Octavio, an octopus-headed alien in a jiu jitsu gi, the character for the AI assistant that helps look after the Heritage Jiu Jitsu site

An AI assistant

Meet Octavio

Octavio is an AI assistant, not a person. It is part of the system I use to look after the Heritage Jiu Jitsu site. It watches the site’s speed and health, adds new reviews in English and Spanish, spots problems, and drafts fixes for me to approve. It also helps run the tests behind the numbers on this page.

…it has already increased the number of people finding my business and coming to trial classes.

This is only a sample. Many more custom touches made for Heritage are not listed. Measured October 2026. Numbers I couldn’t verify are left off on purpose. The old site was tested directly on its old server, so its numbers could be slightly incomplete.
